A true "gold rush" has begun in Lithuania's energy market, with the focus shifting away from electricity generation itself towards the ability to store surplus energy. On sunny days, when electricity prices on the exchange turn negative because generation significantly exceeds consumption, large-scale battery systems become a critical solution. One such project is the EUR 31 million Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) being developed by UAB IG Kapitalas in Kybartai.

To finance part of the project, the developer has decided to issue a EUR 4 million bond programme, with the first tranche opening for investment on May 13 through the BeMyBond bond platform.

Lithuania's disconnection from the BRELL electricity system, combined with rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity, has created an urgent need for domestic grid balancing solutions. As a result, battery energy storage facilities are becoming infrastructure of strategic national importance, reflected in strong government support through financing from the National Development Bank ILTE and grants provided by the Environmental Project Management Agency (APVA).

"From a technological perspective, battery parks are the ideal solution for providing these essential system services and ensuring grid stability," says Lukas Danielevičius, Business Development Manager at UAB IG Kapitalas.

The 60 MW battery energy storage project being developed in Kybartai has already reached an advanced stage. UAB IG Kapitalas has signed a financing agreement with the National Development Bank ILTE for a loan of up to EUR 19.7 million and secured an APVA grant of EUR 3.1 million, which will be paid upon project completion. In addition, all required permits have been obtained, the main battery equipment has already been ordered, and the prices for construction, development, and equipment have been fixed, significantly reducing the risk of cost overruns and allowing the project budget to be planned with greater certainty.

"We continue to see growing investor interest in the energy sector, alongside increasing demand to diversify bond portfolios, which have traditionally been dominated by real estate bonds," says Indrė Dargytė, CEO of BeMyBond. According to her, however, the market still lacks large, high-quality energy projects, which is why investors tend to react extremely quickly.

"It is not uncommon for bond offerings on the BeMyBond platform to be fully subscribed in less than an hour," notes the co-founder of the bond platform.

The total value of the Kybartai battery energy storage project is approximately EUR 31 million. The project will be financed through a EUR 19.3 million loan from ILTE, a EUR 4 million bond programme offered in several tranches via the BeMyBond platform, while the remaining EUR 8 million will be contributed by the shareholders.

The first tranche, valued at EUR 1.5 million, will launch on the BeMyBond platform on May 13, offering investors an annual interest rate of 8.25% with a two-year maturity. The minimum investment amount is EUR 1,000.

UAB IG Kapitalas is a holding company developing industrial and energy projects. In 2025, the group's companies generated nearly EUR 50 million in revenue and EUR 15 million in EBITDA. The holding company also owns UAB KMT, a well-known engineering and manufacturing company specialising in the design and installation of loading equipment, the production of truck bodies, and custom steel structures.
